Choosing Online Singing Lessons

Why I chose online singing lessons
Online singing lessons are ideal for people who are just starting to learn to sing what ever their age. Singing in front of someone else might be too scary and the thought of actually working with a singing teacher can be terrifying. With online singing lessons you get to do your initial work in private and you are able to be sure you sound at least OK before anyone ever hears you.
My Story
When I first decided I wanted to learn to sing it was a huge thing for me. All my life I've wished I could sing and I honestly believed that I just couldn't. When I was a child I knew I wasn't 'tone deaf' but that just meant that when I did sing I knew that I wasn't in tune. I'd no idea what to do about it. I couldn't control my voice or breathing enough to make a difference to the sounds I produced and so I just stopped trying.
It made me a bit sad but it just became something I accepted. Then I met my partner, who just happens to be a wonderful singer and musician. He sings as easily as he breathes and it's just about as vital to his well being! I was so envious and it bought back lots of childhood feelings. I came from a big Scots family where almost everyone sang on every possible occasion. The cry of "Will ye no give us a song?" went up any time the family got together. Very early on I decided I just couldn't sing well enough and stopped trying. I'd tell a story or say a poem but never sing. Inside it made me sad but I never told anyone. My singing voice was silenced and never really developed.
Whiz forward many years, here I am with a singing partner who sings at a large friendly folk club every single week and me with no singing voice. Every week I go and listen to ordinary people singing with extraordinary voices and I don't even feel comfortable to join in the choruses. I do what I did in school and just mouth the words but Oh how I long to join in!
Learn to sing at my age?
I thought I was being a bit ridiculous. You can't learn to sing when you are middle aged, can you? Talking to other people in the folk club I began to make some interesting discoveries. Many of them had not sung at all when they were younger. One of the best singers, with a glorious tenor voice, thought he was tone deaf till he was in his 50s! Another good singer was told by a singing teacher to never sing in public as she had a deep voice and people would think she was a man! These people had learned to sing so maybe I could too.
But how to learn to sing?
The first thing I realized was that I couldn't take the rejection of going to a singing teacher and being laughed at. Now I do know that it is very unlikely they would laugh at me, but still that fear stopped me doing anything. That little desire to be able to sing like everyone else didn't go away. It just sat there getting bigger each week. It wasn't that I wanted to stand in front of everyone and perform, just that I wanted to join in choruses.
Finally I did what I always do when I'm researching something new. I went on the internet and I was amazed by what I discovered. (Did you know that being 'tone deaf' is a real but rare disability? I'm going to do another hub on this very soon!) All these things I thought I knew about singing turned out to be myths and misconceptions. It really is possible for anyone to learn to sing!
I also found several online singing lessons programs that promised to help me learn to sing in the privacy of my own home. Perfect!
Update
Now I'm even learning to write my own songs with the help of the Songwriters Circle

Which do you think is more important - learning to sing with a nice voice, in tune, or learning to have the confidence to sing in front of others? And can online singing lessons help with either or both?
