North Devon Cottages - choosing your village

North Devon cottages can be found in almost every village or small town in the area. Choosing which village to pick can be the trickiest part of your planning. Your holiday can be transformed into something quite wonderful by finding just the right place for your break. On the other hand the wrong choice can really get in the way of your holiday.

Clovelly, by the way, the village shown in the photo, is one example of a village where you simply can't stay in self catering accommodation.

There isn't any.

Pretty though Clovelly looks I'm not sure I'd really want to stay there in a cottage anyway. I'm happier with quiet out of the way spots and there are lots of sleepy villages in North Devon that the bulk of tourists never visit.

These are working villages not tourist traps and you have to not mind the occasional tractor, passing locals nodding 'good morning' or even the odd one peering in your window as they pass. For a week or so they'll welcome you into their local shops and pubs so long as you're polite and friendly mostly they will be too.

Then there are cottages right out in the country with no nearby village. If what you are after is total peace, quiet and seclusion then one of these might be the right choice for you. Some are even sited on Exmoor itself and are tucked away from any roads and traffic.

Prices for holiday cottages in North Devon are surprisingly reasonable as it is not yet as popular with the London hoards as Cornwall. If you can visit out of high season and choose one of the less obvious villages you can often get real bargains.

Hiya, your picture of Clovelly brought back memories! as you look down the hill, we stayed in a small hotel on the left hand side. it was lovely. I thought it was a great weekend, but the only thing was the hill! phew! bit steep. but I loved the shops. great stuff thanks nell
