Theatre Breaks - the best show in London
56Theatre Breaks - how to choose the best show
Theatre Breaks are a great way to visit London. The West end is such an interesting and exciting area but it is much more meaningful to actually go and see a show. It is not as expensive as Broadway and you can get a show and hotel deal for much less than you might imagine.
Your problem is really to work out which show is best for you. There is so much choice in the West End it can be quite daunting working out which show you would enjoy most. I thought I'd do a quick guide to choosing your show.
First I'll share my top 5 favourite, never fail, shows for theatre breaks.
- We Will Rock You - it is solid gold, a guaranteed great night out that will have you standing in the aisle waving your arms in the air or stamping your feet by the end. Does not matter if you remember that golden age of Queen or not. I've taken 20 year olds and pensioners to the show and a good time was had by all.
- Billy Elliot - a really strong story line, great dancing and Elton John's music. What more do you need? Male voice choir? Check. Humour? Check! Pathos and a touching ending? Check. Go. And. See. It. End of.
- The Lion King, because it's a small word after all and we are all Disney babes at heart. The spectacle of the costumed dancers goes beyond anything Disney you have ever seen. I don't care how old you are this one is a must.
- Les Miserables, a bit of culture now but presented in a way that doesn't hurt at all. Glorious soaring music, fantastic set pieces and much more humour than you might imagine. It's been running for over 20 years for a very good reason. Simply stunning.
- Mamma Mia, you might have shunned Abba in your youth, or be too young to remember Bernie & Bjorn. No matter. The stage show is amazing, far surpassing anything you might have seen in the cinema. No offence to Meryl Streep but she did not have the polished performance that comes from living the part 8 times a week.
That's my favourites and I didn't even have chance to mention Wicked, Ghost, or 4 or 5 others!
Now you have to work out which one will be best for your theatre break.
